The city of Greenville has finalized designs of its new wheelsports park.
Approximately 10 acres of land adjacent to the Greenville Downtown Airport will be transformed into a new public park named “Wheels Up.” The park will feature a concrete skate park, an asphalt pump track, and a paved bicycle playground.
A multiphase design process guided by public feedback was completed over the past seven months for the project. Final designs of the wheelsports park were unveiled during Greenville City Council’s annual retreat on Feb. 12.
In addition to the recreational uses, the wheelsports park will include a central pavilion, a warmup area, shade canopies, viewing lawns and picnic groves. A parking lot would be located off Airport Road for park users.

“Something we’ve really tried to develop is a park that is for everyone,” said Sean McKay, a principal at PORT Urbanism, one of the project’s design firms.
A multi-use greenway would also run alongside the park, connecting to the city’s planned Airport Loop Trail extension of the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail Green Line. Greenville City Manager Shannon Lavrin said the city’s long-term plan is to fund the wheelsports park and then move into the design of the approximately four-mile loop trail.
A public-private partnership will be used to fund the wheelsports park. The city’s budget proposal for fiscal 2027 will include funding for the park’s construction. Naming rights opportunities will also be available to help fund the project.
The project’s design team plans to spend the next year completing engineering drawings and construction documentation. The bidding process for the project is expected to be completed by the end of the 2026.
Construction of the wheelsports park is expected to begin in early 2027, with an estimated opening in 2028.

Site location
“Wheels Up” will be built on approximately 10 acres of land at 425 Airport Road, located next to the Greenville Downtown Airport. Greenville City Council approved a lease agreement for the site in 2024.
